Why calculate something like this at all?

In 2015, writer Tim Urban published an essay called "The Tail End" with an observation that has stayed with millions of readers: if you moved away from home after school, you have already used up the vast majority of your in-person time with your parents — perhaps 90 percent or more. What's left isn't measured in years. It's measured in visits.

That reframing is the entire purpose of this calculator. "My parents are in their sixties, they have decades left" feels comfortable and infinitely postponable. "I will see my mother about 75 more times" does not. The number isn't there to frighten you — it's there to convert an abstract someday into a concrete, countable thing you can actually act on this month.

How the calculation works

The estimate multiplies two quantities: your parent's statistically remaining years, and how often you currently see each other. For remaining years we use sex-specific period life tables (Destatis, the German federal statistical office, 2021/2023 — Western European values are broadly similar), interpolated by age. A 70-year-old mother, for example, has a remaining life expectancy of about 17 years; a 70-year-old father about 14. If you see her four times a year, that's roughly 68 more visits. If you see her monthly, it's around 200.

Three things this number is not. It is not a prediction for any individual — health, lifestyle, and plain luck move real outcomes far above or below the average, and remaining life expectancy actually rises the older a person already is. It is not a countdown — nobody knows the real number, which is exactly why the average is the honest thing to show. And it is not stored anywhere: the calculation runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter leaves your device.

The only variable you control

You can't change your parent's age, and you can't (much) change life expectancy. The one input completely under your control is visit frequency — and the math responds to it dramatically. Going from four visits a year to six doesn't sound like a life change, but across 17 statistical years it's the difference between 68 visits and 102. One extra weekend per year, sustained, adds more time with a parent than most people would guess a major life decision could.

A few low-friction ways people raise the number in practice:

  • Put a recurring visit on the calendar. "First Sunday of the month" survives busy seasons; "soon" does not. Recurring beats ambitious.
  • Anchor visits to things that already happen. Birthdays, holidays, a sibling's kids' events — attach a day-before or day-after to trips you're making anyway.
