Why check-ins work

Most relationships do not collapse because one person lacks a perfect speech. They get noisy because important things only get mentioned after they have become grievances. A check-in lowers the stakes: appreciation first, one topic at a time, a clear next action at the end.

Use this tool when the relationship is basically intact but needs maintenance. If there is already a rupture, pair it with the apology helper or the hard conversation planner.

The structure

A good check-in has four parts: a calm opening, shared ground rules, a short agenda, and one behavioural commitment. That last part matters. "Let's do better" feels warm and changes little; "I will handle the school email on Tuesdays and you will take Friday pickup" changes the week.

If you want more context, read the guide to the weekly relationship check-in, then use this tool to generate the agenda.
