Bids for connection are small attempts to create attention, response, or shared meaning through a comment, question, touch, invitation, or moment of play.
Bids for connection are usually smaller than people expect. Someone shows a photo, shares a tiny observation, asks a seemingly ordinary question, or looks for eye contact. The message is not only: look at this. It is also: are you with me?
The term is useful in relationship practice because closeness is not built only through big conversations. It is also built through many small moments in which someone turns toward, stays neutral, or turns away. When people notice these moments earlier, they can maintain connection before distance becomes obvious.
What bids look like
A bid can be playful, practical, emotional, or casual. Can you help me for a second? Look how beautiful the sky is. I had a strange moment today. Humor, shared memories, and small rituals can also be bids.
Many conflicts begin when one person sends a bid and the other reads it as an interruption. That does not mean you must always respond immediately. It does mean that a brief warm signal usually works better than ignoring it.
How to respond
Responding to bids does not mean dropping every task. A small response is often enough: I see it, give me two minutes. Or: that sounds important, and I want to listen properly in a moment. Those replies protect connection and boundaries at the same time.
People can also make their own bids clearer. Instead of only sending a link, say: this reminded me of you. Instead of waiting hurt, say: I would like ten minutes of real attention today.
