Head-to-head

Monica vs Mesh

Two rivals, compared by somebody who sells a third tool — and says so on the page.

Short answer

The cleanest either-or in the category. Monica is entirely yours — open source, self-hosted, nobody but you reads along — and looks like 2017 in exchange. Mesh is the best-looking software in the field and maintains itself, in exchange it sits on US servers whose keys the vendor holds. There is no middle ground between them; you pick which half matters more.

Where they differ

Dimension Monica Mesh
Data custody Complete: self-hosted, AGPL, no vendor access. US servers, server-side encryption — Mesh holds the keys.
Upkeep Everything by hand, plus server maintenance. None. The address book builds itself from email, calendar, LinkedIn and X.
Design Functional, visibly older. The category benchmark — contact photos, feed timeline, clean onboarding.
3-year cost About €30 self-hosted, about €270 in the cloud. Free to 1,000 contacts, otherwise $10/month — about €360 over three years.
If the vendor disappears Nothing happens. The code is open, your instance keeps running. Clay was bought by Automattic in 2025 and rebranded to Mesh in 2026. It turned out fine — but you had no say in it.

Pick Monica if…

…you want nobody but you to have access, and you are willing to work for it. Monica is open source under AGPL, stable since 2017, free forever self-hosted, and nobody can take your instance away or change its terms. That is a different kind of commitment from any hosted vendor's privacy promise — it does not depend on somebody keeping their word. The price is manual work and a server you maintain.

Pick Mesh if…

…you have tried this before and it went quiet. The most honest reason for Mesh is not the looks but that a tool you do not have to maintain is the only one that still holds data a year later. Mesh pulls people out of what you already do, keeps profiles current, and nudges you about the ones you have not spoken to in a while. That it is also the best-looking app in the category helps — software you enjoy opening gets opened.

And where do we sit?

In exactly the gap this comparison opens: Monica's data position without Monica's server work, and closer to Mesh's design than to Monica's. What we do not deliver is Mesh's automation — that costs a server reading along, and we decline it deliberately.

Common questions

Can I use Monica without my own server?
Yes, there is a hosted cloud edition at about $9 a month. That does give up the exact argument Monica wins this comparison on, though — the data is back with a vendor.
Is Mesh secure?
Server-side encrypted and professionally run, yes. But "secure" and "only you can read it" are not the same thing: Mesh holds the keys because the features could not run otherwise.
