Endearist vs Cloze
A fair, specific comparison — written so you'd be comfortable if a Cloze engineer read it.
Fairness pledge
Cloze is the original "AI personal assistant" — it pulls together every inbox you have (email, calendar, LinkedIn, Twitter, iMessage) into one contact-centric view, then surfaces signals about who you should follow up with. It's been around since 2014, has a loyal user base, and the iOS app is genuinely useful for people who run their lives out of email. Cloze's trade-off is that its value depends on it reading everything — your email, calendar, social DMs — and storing the resulting graph on Cloze's US servers. Endearist makes the opposite trade-off: we don't ingest your inboxes, so we know less about you by default, but you also know exactly what we know.
Where your data lives
Cloze: cloud-only, hosted on US servers. Cloze ingests email, calendar, LinkedIn, Twitter, and iMessage metadata to build its relationship graph — that data sits in Cloze's database. Endearist: your device first — sync optional via your own cloud or Endearist Cloud (EU-hosted). We never ingest your inboxes.
How AI is accessed
Cloze's AI reads your aggregated inbox data continuously on its US servers to score follow-up urgency, detect signals (job changes, mentions), and draft replies. The model runs on Cloze infrastructure with full inbox context. Endearist's AI features are opt-in, run with your own key on-device, or via Pro Cloud's EU-routed pipeline — we never read your email at all.
3-year total cost
Cloze Pro: $17/month over 3 years = ~€600. Cloze Business Silver: $29/month = ~€1,040 over 3 years. Endearist Pro Cloud: €9.99/month = ~€360 over 3 years. Endearist Pro Lifetime: €69 once.
What we don't do
We don't auto-ingest email, calendar, or social DMs. We don't score follow-up urgency from inbox signals. We don't build a relationship graph from your communications. If you want a tool that reads everything and surfaces who needs attention, Cloze does this better than anyone — but you're paying for it with a US-hosted copy of your entire communication history.
Feature matrix
Side-by-side.
| Feature | Endearist | Cloze |
|---|---|---|
| Local-first data storage | Yes — your device, not a US cloud, is where the data lives. | No — cloud-only on Cloze's US servers. |
| End-to-end encrypted sync | Yes — AES-256-GCM; the key is yours alone, so no one else can read your data. | Server-side encryption only; Cloze holds the keys and reads contents to power AI. |
| Mobile native apps (iOS / Android) | iOS and Android both native, from one Flutter codebase. | iOS (native, polished); Android (native, less prioritised). |
| Desktop native apps | Native on all three desktops: macOS, Windows, and Linux. | macOS (native); Windows + web; no Linux. |
| AI features | Nothing runs unless you opt in: your own key on-device, Pro Cloud Light (~250 EU-routed actions/mo), or Pro Cloud (~600 actions/mo + voice). | Bundled — continuous AI scoring of inbox signals, follow-up suggestions, reply drafting on Cloze's US servers. |
| Self-host option | Not offered yet; the local store is the desktop app itself. | No — SaaS only. |
| Pricing | Up to 25 contacts free, then either €69 once (Pro Lifetime), €4.99/mo (Pro Cloud Light), or €9.99/mo (Pro Cloud). | Pro $17/mo. Business Silver $29/mo. Higher business tiers above. |
| Open source code | Committed to a source release should we shut down or be acquired. | No — proprietary. |
| Plain-Markdown export | Yes — human-readable Markdown; no app required to open it. | CSV / vCard export; no Markdown export. |
| Voice-note transcription | A headline feature here: transcription on Pro Cloud (60 min/mo) or with your own key. | Limited — voice notes captured, transcription not a headline feature. |
| Family / multi-vault share | Made for families, not orgs: 2-seat family share on Pro Cloud; multi-vault is on the roadmap. | Business team plans for orgs; not a household / family construct. |
| Journal / reflection | A journal, not an inbox: built in, with weekly ritual and appreciation prompts. | No — Cloze is an aggregating inbox, not a journal. |
| Relationship depth (how-we-met, pets) | Fields you enter deliberately: how-we-met, pets, custom pronouns, life events, debts, attachments. | Communication-derived fields (last contact, frequency, social activity); no pets / how-we-met / debts. |
| Calendar / messenger integrations | Minimal by design: calendar is read-only (Google/Apple/Outlook); messenger context comes in manually via the share sheet. | Deepest in category — full two-way email, calendar, LinkedIn, Twitter, iMessage ingestion. |
When to pick Cloze
When Cloze is the better fit.
If your life genuinely runs out of email and calendar, and you're comfortable with a US-hosted AI reading every inbox you have to surface follow-up suggestions, Cloze is hard to beat — its decade-plus of feature accretion gives it a depth no startup matches. Pick Cloze when you want the strongest auto-aggregation in the category and you can pay $17-29/month indefinitely. We're built for people who want the relationship layer separate from the inbox — not auto-derived from it.
Switching
Coming from Cloze?
From Cloze: export your contacts as CSV or vCard (Settings → Export). Endearist imports both via Settings → Import. Cloze's communication-derived fields (last contact, frequency scores) won't migrate — those are recomputed by Cloze each day and don't exist as stable data. Notes you wrote yourself will come across; AI-generated signal summaries won't. Many users keep Cloze running on the side for inbox triage and add Endearist for the deeper personal layer.
