The two numbers that decide everything
Every cousin relationship is settled by exactly two counts, and once you have them the naming is mechanical. Find the nearest ancestor the two of you share. Count the generations from you up to that ancestor. Count the generations from the other person up to the same ancestor. That's it — those two numbers produce every "second cousin once removed" you have ever been confused by.
The degree — first, second, third cousin — is the smaller of the two counts, minus one. Share a grandparent (2 generations up on both sides) and you are first cousins. Share a great-grandparent (3 up) and you are second cousins. The removed count is simply the difference between the two numbers. Same generation, nothing removed. One generation apart, once removed.
Removed means generations, not distance
This is the single biggest misunderstanding, and it's worth stating plainly: "removed" has nothing to do with how distantly related you are, how far apart you live, or how little you speak. It describes a difference in generation, nothing else.
Your first cousin's child is your first cousin once removed. So is your parent's first cousin — the relationship is symmetrical, it just points the other way. Both are one generation off from you, both are "once removed," and one of them probably changed your nappies while the other one is nine years old.
What the shared-DNA number does and doesn't mean
The calculator also shows the expected shared DNA for each relationship: 12.5 % for first cousins, 3.125 % for second cousins, 0.781 % for third cousins. That figure is the coefficient of relationship — a statistical expectation derived from how inheritance averages out, not a measurement of you.
Real autosomal DNA tests scatter widely around it, and the scatter grows as the relationship gets more distant. Two genuine second cousins might share 2 % or 5 %. Two genuine fourth cousins might share nothing detectable at all, because at that distance it is entirely possible to inherit no overlapping segments. If a test result disagrees with the chart, the chart is describing an average, not making a claim about your family.
Why the words stop working
Three cases fall outside the cousin vocabulary entirely, and the calculator names them properly instead of forcing a cousin label:
- Direct line. If one of you is the shared ancestor, you are parent and child, or grandparent and grandchild. No cousin term applies.
- Siblings. Share a parent on both sides and you are siblings — the closest relatives who are not cousins at all.
- The aunt and uncle line. One side a child of the shared ancestor, the other side further down: that produces aunt/uncle and niece/nephew, then great-aunt and great-niece as the gap widens.
The relatives who quietly disappear
There's a reason people search for this. Second cousins are the exact band of family that vanishes without any decision being made: close enough that you'd be glad to hear from them, distant enough that no one is scheduled to. You meet at weddings, you say "we should stay in touch," and then a decade passes.
