Source protection isn't a policy, it's an architecture decision. Endearist is being built to keep your contacts, ground rules, and who-knows-whom notes locally on your machine — not in a newsroom tool, not in someone's cloud, not one subpoena away from a server you've never seen.

Notes about sources shouldn't touch a server you don't control
A note that connects a name to a leaked document is the most dangerous text you own. Endearist is designed local-first: everything is meant to stay on your device, full stop. For a second device, optional end-to-end encrypted sync over storage you run yourself is planned, with a key only you would hold. No vendor can be compelled to hand over what it cannot read, and no analytics pipeline should ever learn who you talk to. The vendored app measurement does not confirm an encrypted local database. It records an unencrypted SQLite file; an app lock does not encrypt that file. Protect your device and backups independently. End-to-end encrypted sync over storage you run yourself — a local or shared folder, or a WebDAV server — is planned for v1. Google Drive as a destination is not decided yet. Managed sync on Endearist Cloud is planned for after v1, as part of the Pro Cloud subscription only.
Ground rules, per source, written down once
Was that ministry official on background or deep background? Did the lawyer agree to be quoted by role but not name? Memory is how those promises get broken. Endearist's relationship journal is meant to give every source a timeline: the ground rules you agreed, what was said at the off-record coffee in March, what you promised in return. When a story finally runs eight months later, you can check exactly what you're allowed to use.
Who-knows-whom is the real beat map
The press officer used to work in the minister's office. The compliance consultant who tipped you off was introduced by a lawyer you met covering an entirely different trial. Stories break along these introduction paths. Endearist is meant to let you note who introduced whom, who used to work where, who owes whom a favor — so when you need a way into a closed institution, you can trace the two-hop route instead of cold-calling the front desk.
Keep slow sources warm before you need them on deadline
The forensic accountant you call twice a year, the union insider who only talks when trust is fresh, the retired regulator who knows where everything is buried — these contacts are worthless if your first message in eighteen months is a request. Endearist's planned per-contact cadence is meant to let you set each source's natural rhythm, and a warmth score could show whose trust is quietly expiring. Check in when you need nothing; that's what makes the deadline call answerable. Warmth tracking: scope and availability are not confirmed. Status: not decided yet.
Your source book survives every newsroom you pass through
Outlets fold, desks merge, staff jobs become freelance ones. The newsroom CRM, the shared address book, the Slack — all stay behind. Endearist is designed to live on your personal device from the start: contact import via CSV or vCard is planned, and so is an export of everything as plain Markdown that any text editor can read in 2040. The pricing proposal is a one-time licence, not a subscription tied to an employer's expense system. A career in journalism is the contacts you keep; keep them somewhere that's actually yours. When Endearist isn't the right fit
Two hard limits. This holds no confidential source material and should never be used for anything that would endanger a source — local-first is safer than a cloud CRM, but a device can still be seized, and source protection needs a plan that is not a contacts app. Second, it is not a research tool. What it is meant to hold is the ordinary reporting network: the expert who answers on deadline, the press officer worth staying civil with, the contact from a story two years ago.
